The Space We Take

Have you ever wondered how much space we take up here on this earth? Of course, if we are speaking of our physical bodies only, then somewhere in the vicinity of 9 cubic feet. It would be a narrow point of view for sure, to think that this is all there is to the space we fill. If the measurement of the space we take up in the world is equivalent only to our physical bodies, then when we leave this earth it would be as though we never existed. And we know, without doubt, that this is simply not true.

We fill up space with our connections with family and friends. Every interaction with every person we come across in our day to day lives takes up space. We take up space with our conversations, activities, laughter, abilities, expressions of love and caring, kindness, creativity. The things we have done, built, created, worked at, developed, planned, completed, all take up space here on this earth. And so, when we lose one of our people, all of their space transfers to our collective memories. It is stored in our hearts and minds. It is never lost, but we have a responsibility to protect it and care for it. That's the reason that our memories are so important; to maintain the sacred space of our loved ones that are no longer here with us. And so, we need to share our memories and tell the stories. And we need to listen to the stories of those around us.
