Who Mikael Was

Shortly after Mikael died, I received this message from one of his school friends.

"I'm Soo sorry for your loss your boy was my very first friend in Keewatin public I had the worst time going to school but Mike made it easy once I seen his face in the classroom my whole mood would change and I would be happy to go to class because he was there. I had all types of memories flood in yesterday realizing how big of an impact he made on my school life it would've been brutal for me if it wasn't for Mike's bright smile and presence comforting me with a wave and smile. "

This is who Mikael was. This message sums up his beautiful heart so perfectly. This ability to welcome others and make them feel like they matter is such a gift. This is who he was even when he was struggling to stay above the surface, when the addiction pulled him back under and he had to fight though another detox, another beginning. Jesus called us to show his love to others and Mikael did this well. His absence is now such a loss of light to the rest of us.

Whenever I read this message, I can see Mikael's smile lighting up the space around him. I can feel his warmth and hear his voice calling out in welcome. He was so friendly! Messages like this fill my heart with love and pride for the person he was.
