Mother’s Day

Dear bereaved moms, I know how hard this day is for you. It is hard for me too. I miss Mikael so deeply, as I know you are missing your child. Being a mom is the best part of me. Within all of the pain and all of the heartache, I know that I am still Davis’s mom and Mikael’s mom. I will always be. So, today, I wish to share a poem with you about motherhood.

Mother's Day

Such inexpressible sweetness
in the moment of discovery.
The life within us.
A wonder at the miracle.
This soul we have yet to meet
in person
and yet,
know so intimately.
Hearts of our hearts,
spirits forever entangled.

A metamorphosis
into a role with no instructions,
no guide book, no ending.
A permanent shift of our minds
from us to them.
Kisses on skinned knees,
gentle soothing of nightmares.
Referee of sibling squabbles,
dispenser of guidance
and nourishment provider.
Protector and defender,
encourager in the triumphs
and struggles.
Comforter, advisor,
enthusiastic fan.

Absolute, unconditional,
unreserved, categorical love
for the hearts of our hearts.
We contemplate this
identity,
on this one specific day,
meant just for us.
We reflect on this journey
and marvel at the magic
of it.
