Camp Firefly
Last weekend I had the wonderful privilege of helping out at Camp Firefly. This is a grief camp for children and their caregivers located at Camp Manitou just outside Winnipeg. I was highly impressed with the trauma informed organization of this camp. Both scheduling and content were geared towards children having choice and the freedom and safety to express their grief in their own way. The setting was a perfect place for children as well with a variety of activities for them to take part in. The slip and slide was a definite favourite! I'm thankful to be given the opportunity to spend time there.
One aspect of the camp I found particularly helpful was the opportunity for caregivers to stay with their children. This family approach is so important. I find myself pondering how we could provide something similar here in Kenora. We have so many children coping with grief and support for them and their families could make such a difference. Something to think about!
