Prints in the Sand

The song, "The Snows of New York" came up on my play list the other day as I was driving. There is a line in the song that says "When there was just one set of prints in the sand, that was when I carried you." I've heard this song numerous times , it's a favourite, but I've never really stopped to consider that this imagery is flawed. This line creates a beautiful picture of God carrying us when we're in times of hardship. But is that the only time? Shouldn't there only be one set of prints in the sand always? Don't we need to be carried by God in all circumstances?

When our lives are going well, there is a temptation to think we're fine going it alone - that we don't need God's help. We may pray in thankfulness for our blessings but forget to ask for God's constant guidance and direction. When we forget our need, we end up in places we don't wish to be. So, in my mind, we should be asking the Lord to carry us every single moment, leaving one set of prints in the sand at all times.
