The Importance of Storytelling

Yesterday we had a family day at our in-laws cabin. It's been such a busy summer for everyone and we haven't had a lot of opportunity for all of us to be together. It was a wonderful day. As we sat down at the dock, we shared stories about Mikael. Davis talked about when they used to drive home together from Thunder Bay. Davis ended up doing all the driving and Mikael put his headphones on and watched movies on his laptop. Part way through the trip, Mikael asked Davis to turn the radio down because he couldn't hear his movie!!! 🤣🤣 Just one of many stories of what it was like to travel with Mikael! We laughed and laughed! It felt so good to talk about him and share funny stories.

I am reminded once again about the importance of storytelling in the grief process. Talking about the ones we love who have died has such positive physical and mental benefits. Studies have shown that sharing stories lowers stress hormones, calms our nervous system and aids sleep patterns. It is a practice that combats the isolation which is a very real part of grief.

I talk about Mikael as often as I can and find myself gravitating towards those I can do this with comfortably. Family and good friends that provide me with the chance to share memories of Mikael are treasured beyond measure. Talking about our lost loved ones is one of the most beneficial things we can do for ourselves. If you are walking on a path of grief, I hope you are able to surround yourself with people who will do this with you.
