The Love We Have

I was recently on a flight heading home from Toronto with a young mother and her five month old baby girl sitting beside me. I couldn't help but notice how smitten this mom was with her little one! And what mother isn't smitten with her child! Throughout the flight, I found myself drawn to them again and again. There was an unmistakeable aura of love surrounding the two of them.

The love a mother has for her child is deep and wide and unique and infinite. This is a bond that can never be broken, love originating from our very bones, from our hearts. Their hearts are embedded in our hearts. When you lose a child, this love stays. It can't be transferred elsewhere. I can have love in my heart for many people, there is no limit. But, at the same time, although love is limitless, it is also specific. The love I have for my son Davis, is distinct and meant for no one else. The same is true of my love for Mikael. Even though he is no longer here, this love cannot be shifted to anyone or anything else. It is for him alone.

This is a truth that grieving moms want you to know. We hold the love for our children in our flesh and bones. Since our children are no longer here with us, we must find ways to direct our love to them, to find a place for that love to be. We may know they are safe in heaven but still have a physical need for our love to connect with them there. And so, we do everything we can to honour them, to show them our love, to ensure they are never forgotten. It is sacred work!

One such mother I have been blessed to meet is Marcy Larson. Marcy lost her son Andy in a car accident August 15, 2018. She started a podcast, "Losing a Child: Always Andy's Mom" to reach out to other parents, offering understanding, God's comfort and hope. She is an amazing Mom and her ministry honours Andy in the most beautiful way. I had the pleasure of being a guest on her podcast and I'd love to share our conversation with you.

I highly recommend her podcast. You will find empathy and support from a brave and compassionate woman, Marcy Larson. https://andysmom.com/
